Sports reporters around the country are looking forward to Superbowl
Sunday. Sports Illustrated columnist Peter King wrote an article
entitled, "Middle men Urlacher-Clark battle for center of field a key to
game."

He writes, "I think the photo of the Super Bowl -- and I don't care
what happens at the game -- came at 8:57 this morning, when Lovie
Smith and Tony Dungy, the first two black coaches in the 41-year
history of the Super Bowl, spent 70 seconds posing for pictures
behind the Vince Lombardi Trophy. "Talk about a picture that says
1,000 words,'' whispered Andrea Kremer of NBC. 'That's a
goosebump moment.'"

Discussion-Starters for Younger Children

  • Ask: Is it important for games to have rules? Why/why not?
  • Consider asking students to explain how some of the
rules for games that they regularly play are important.
You might want to help them identify these rules and
make a list of them on the board.

  • Tell your students to think of their favorite game. Now,ask
them how they might change one of the game's rules.
  • In small groups, students can discuss how to change
one of the rules. Consider allowing students to play
these games using the new rules.

  • Tell your students to name one rule of a sport that they think
makes the game more fun. Ask why the rule makes the game
    more fun.
  • This question will provide a good opportunity for
students to discuss their own experience playing sports.

  • Ask your students if they've ever had a good time watching
other people play a game. What do they like about watching
    others play a game?
  • You might discuss the role of cheering. Consider
    creating a class cheer.

Discussion-Starters for Older Children

  • Vocabulary terms to discuss: Architect; Athleticism; Emerges;
    and, "Goosebump Moment".

  • Should Superbowl Sunday be considered a legal holiday?
Why/why not? (What is a holiday?)
  • Consider asking students to respond to this question in a
    quick-write.

  • Ask your students to respond to the following statement:
"American culture is comprised of professional sports and fast
food restaurants." Encourage them to explain their thoughts.
  • This prompt could make for an interesting class
    discussion.

  • The rules for every sport evolve over time. Ask your students
how they think the game of football will be different than it is
    today in another twenty years.
  • Students might answer this question in small groups and
then report back to the class.

  • Ask students to describe their favorite commercials from the
Superbowl. Why did they like these commercials?
