MSNBC is running an article entitled, “Ancient Ice Shelf Breaks Free
in Canadian Arctic.” The subtitle states, “Breakaway may signal the
onset of accelerated change,” researchers say. ." The article quotes
Warwick Vincent, an arctic researcher, as saying, “This is a dramatic
and disturbing event. It shows that we are losing remarkable features
of the Canadian North that have been in place for many thousands of
years.” This researcher also stated, “We are crossing climate
thresholds, and these may signal the onset of accelerated change
ahead.”
The article emphasizes that though researchers once thought that
global warming change would occur slowly, this is not the case.
Change is occurring much faster than scientists had expected.

Discussion-Starters for Younger Children
- Ask your child(ren) to explain the difference between winter
and summer. Is it summer or winter, now? How do they know?
- Tell your child(ren) that there are some areas of the world that
never get warm. These places always have snow and ice.
These places remain dark throughout much of the winter. Ask
them what it would be like to live in one of these places? Would
they like to live there? Why/why not?
- What do your child(ren) like most about the winter? Would
they prefer to live in a place that had more snow or less snow?
Why?
- Ask your child(ren) to imagine a world that did not have
winter. No snow would fall, not even on mountain tops. Do
your children think that it would be sad to lose winter? Why?
Discussion-Starters for Older Children
- Vocabulary Terms to Discuss: Climate; Imagery; Arctic; and,
Seismic Data.
- For over a decade, scientists have warned people that the Earth’
s atmosphere is warming. Ask your child(ren) why they think
that people and companies still pollute. Encourage them to
explain their ideas.
- Pose: Imagine that the director of the Environmental Protection
Agency asked for your advice as to how to encourage people
to take better care of their environment? What would you
suggest? Why? Do your child(ren) think that people will ever
take better care of the environment? Why/why not? What do
you think?
- Imagine that all of the polar ice-caps in the world were to melt
and a shallow layer of water covered the entire Earth. Ask your
child(ren) how their lives would change? What new innovations
would need to be developed for the human race to continue?
- You and your child(ren) might enjoy looking through this
website entitled “Arctic Theme Page.” This page includes a
web-cam which operates when the North Pole has sunlight.
