Russia's Threat
June 4, 2007

The New York Times is running an article entitled, "Bush Goes to
Europe in Wake of Putin's Threat."

The article begins, "President Bush flew to Europe today for talks with
world leaders later this week, including President Vladimir V. Putin of
Russia, in the wake of a threat by Mr. Putin to point Russian missiles
at Europe if the United States builds its missile defense system in
Poland and the Czech Republic."

The article reports, "The differences over America's plans for the
missile shield are likely to dominate the talks in Europe. Ms. Merkel
and Group of 8 leaders from Britain, Canada, France, Italy, Japan and
the United States had been hoping that their meeting could reach a
consensus over a separate issue, the future status of Kosovo, one of
the last unresolved conflicts of the Balkan wars of the 1990s."

Discussion Starters for Younger Children

  • Ask your students if they've ever been threatened by another
child.  What did the child say to them?  How did they respond?
How do your students think that people should respond when
    others threaten them?
  • Consider asking students to write a few sentences in
    response to these questions.

  • Ask your students if they've ever threatened somebody.  Who
did they threaten?  Why did they threaten this person? Do they
think it's smart to threaten other people?  Why/why not?
  • Consider asking students what they might have done
instead of threatening the other person.

  • Do your students think it's important for people to talk about
not polluting and keeping the environment clean?  Why/why
    not?
  • Consider asking students to draw pictures showing
people that it's important not to pollute.

  • Ask your students if they've ever seen somebody stick up for
somebody else.  Why did the other person need somebody to
stick up for him/her?  Why was the other person willing to
    stand up for somebody else?
  • Consider asking students to develop skits in which
students demonstrate the importance of helping their
    friends when they need help.

them?  Why/why not? Does the United States have a right to
place these systems in Eastern Europe?  Why/why not?
  • Ask students to develop a conversation between
President Bush and President Putin in which they
    discuss their current disagreement.

  • If your students could advise President Bush to say one thing
to President Putin what would they advise?  Why?
  • Consider asking students to develop a proposal for
President Bush in groups of two or three.

  • What do your students think it means for a country to be
strong? Is there a difference between a country being strong
and a country being important?  Explain!!
