The Washington Post is running an article entitled, "Hamas to Grant
Amnesty to Fatah Leaders."

The article states, "The amnesty announcement defused worries that
Hamas, which completed its swift military seizure of Gaza hours
earlier, would begin dispensing victor's justice in the strip. In
announcing the arrest of the commanders of the vanquished Fatah-
controlled security services, Hamas officials called them
"collaborators," a label indicating they work on behalf of Israel and can
often mean a death sentence in the Palestinian territories."

The article reports, "As Hamas's self-proclaimed "liberation" of Gaza
progressed on Thursday, Fatah leader and Palestinian President
Mahmoud Abbas dissolved the Palestinian government and declared a
state of emergency."

Discussion Starters for Younger Children

  • Have your students ever seen somebody (else) take sides in a
fight between two people? Why would somebody take sides?
Is it fair for somebody else to take sides?  Why/why not?
  • Consider asking students to use a T-Chart to explain the
reasons why it might be fair and the reasons why it
might not be fair to take sides in a fight.

  • Ask your students what the word "forgive" means.  Have they
ever forgiven somebody?  Do your students think that
somebody has ever forgiven somebody for doing something
when the person did not even want to be forgiven?  Why/why
    not?
  • In a class discussion, ask students if they think it is
important to forgive other people.  Why/why not?

  • Have your students ever seen somebody walk away from an
argument or a fight instead of engaging in an argument or
fight?  Why did the person walk away?  Should you consider
somebody who walks away from an argument or a fight a
    "wimp"?  Why/why not?
  • Consider asking students to respond to these questions
    in a few simple sentences.

  • Ask your students what they think it would be like to walk
down a street in a town in which adults were fighting with one
another?  Would they be scared?  Why/why not?  What might
your students do to keep themselves safe?
  • Ask your students to draw a room that they would feel
comfortable staying in to keep safe.  What would the
    room have in it?

Discussion Starters for Older Students

  • Vocabulary terms to discuss: Amnesty; Reconcile; Secular;
    and, Liberation.

  • If your students were advisors to the Prime Minister of Israel
what would they advise him to do considering the fact that
Gaza is so close to Israel?  Why would they advise this?
  • Consider asking students to develop memos in which
they explain what the right reaction for the State of
    Israel would be.

  • Why do your students think that Hamas and Fatah could not
work out their differences civilly, instead of resorting to
fighting?  What questions would your students want to answer
before fully responding to this question?
  • Consider asking students to develop a response to these
questions in groups of two or three.  Provide students
with some time to research the answers to their
    questions.

  • If your students were leaders of Hamas would they have
granted amnesty to Fatah leaders in the Gaza strip?  Why/why
    not?
  • These questions might prompt an interesting class
    discussion.
