Great discussion starting questions can come from just about anywhere. Most of the questions on
this living textbook come from newspaper and magazine articles. But, have you thought about
generating questions from current events in your own school or community.
For example, was a new child recently born into somebody's family? How about asking students to
consider what it means for a person to be special.
Did somebody recently celebrate a birthday? Why do we celebrate birthdays?
You might even want to ask students to ask questions that are on their minds. I've done this many
times in my own classroom. Students love asking questions. It's empowering.
