|
Yesterday a federal judge in Houston, Texas, sentenced Jeffrey K. Skilling, former Enron CEO, to
twenty four years in prison. The Washington Post states:
Jeffrey K. Skilling, the brash former chief executive of Enron Corp., was ordered to serve 24 years
and four months in prison Monday after an emotional court hearing in which he watched a series of
former employees blame him for the fraud at the heart of the company's collapse.
Enron employees have lost more than $1 billion as a result of the company's illegal business
practices and subsequent collapse.

Discussion-Starters:
- Ask your child what the following words mean: "court," "judge," and "justice." Ask your
child if he/she thinks it’s important to have courts and judges in the United States. Why do
they think this?
- Ask what it means to be a good person. Encourage your child to support his/her ideas. What
do you think it means to be a good person? Is there a difference between being a good
person and doing something good or being a bad person and doing something bad? What
does your child think? What do you think?
- Jeffrey Skilling is fifty two years old. He must serve at least 85% of his sentence which
means he will not get out of jail until he is in his seventies. Is it fair to lock him up for so
long, considering he didn't physically hurt anybody? Authorities also plan to take away most
of Skilling’s financial assets. This will deprive his family of the luxuries to which they have
grown accustomed while he is in prison. Is this fair? What does your child think? What do
you think?
- Ancient rabbis used to say that “one good deed leads to another good deed and one sin leads
to another sin.” Ask your child what he/she thinks this means? What do you think this
means? Do you and your child think that this quotation applies to the case of Jeffrey
Skilling? Why/why not?
