  • Secretaries are often know more about what is going on than anybody else.  Become friends
    with them.

  • Remember that the library and multi-media staff often have the keys to best resources.  
    Become friends with them and they’ll help you when you need it.   

  • Remember you’ll likely get sick in the beginning of the school year.  If you talk a lot more
    during the school year, you’ll likely lose your voice.  Have a favorite substitute teacher in
    mind.

  • Remember the teacher next door was once new too.  Don’t be afraid to ask for advice.

  • Get used to dust.  You’ll likely see a lot of it when you take the books out of storage.  

  • Don’t trust that anything you’ll need will work the first time.  The DVD player might
    break/the outlet might not work/the computers might be off line.  Always have a backup
    plan.

  • Have lesson plans ready for a day, a week, or a month before you start the school year.  
    Don’t be afraid to use online resources to help with lesson planning.

  • Your students want to know what’s going on!!  Put an agenda on the board before they
    arrive in class!!

  • Always have an activity up on an overhead/computer monitor for students who arrive early.  
    This will give you time to take care of whatever comes up!!

  • Remember, it’s important for your students to get along with one another and enjoy each
    other’s company.  Plan an icebreaker for the first day!!

  • Keep records from the first day!!  Make sure your grading system complies with school
    policies!!  Students should know what you expect!!

  • Can students go to the restroom during class?  If so, create efficient system so they don’t
    interrupt learning.

  • What if students miss work – because they are sick?  Because they didn’t do it?  Can they
    make it up?  How quickly?  Will anything be taken off?

  • Be flexible!!  Something will come up!!!

  • Dress the part!!  Students will judge a book by its cover and a teacher by his/her clothes!!

  • If you are confident that students will succeed they are more likely to succeed.  Be
    Confident!!

  • Sometimes the best teachers do the least in class!!

  • It’s easier to start tough then become tough after weeks have gone by!!

  • Know your students!!   Know their names, their favorite activities, as much as possible!!

  • Care about your students and they’ll care about your class!!

  • Treat your students respectfully and they’ll want to be respectful!!

  • You are their teacher, not their friend!!

  • HAVE FUN – TEACHING IS THE GREATEST JOB IN THE WORLD!!
