Posting Comments

I've been shocked by the reaction that my post on AlphaSmart has gotten, particularly on the AlphaSmart listserv. Since I did not publish comments immediately after they came in people have accused me of intentionally deleting the comments so that the voices of people who disagree with me would not be heard.

I'm curious as to what is the rule of etiquette regarding speed in posting comments?

By the way, just one more question for people who write provocative comments anonymously: Why not share your name?

People have to get a life! You just wrote your post a-day-and-a-half ago. Unless blogging is your fulltime job, I think posting comments within a couple of days is doing a great job.

And, in terms of the comments that were made about your post, it seems to me that helping our students develop self-discipline and control is a key part of what we teachers need to be doing.

One way to prevent my grandchildren from drowning in a nearby creek is to build a huge fence preventing access and banning them from going near. Another way is to ask them what they think the consequences of falling in the creek would be, and talk with them about how to be careful when they're around water.

Which way would equip them to act more responsibly?

I've read a couple posts recently (unfortunately, I can't remember from which blogs) making similar points.

Andrew, I wrote the message in the Scribl pane, as a way of highlighting the perception that comments were not being moderated quickly.

I did not sign my name to the Scribl pane. I did, however, immediately post in the Alphasmart list that I had done so, and my posts there have my username and a Flickr email address. Might I suggest that I was in no way trying to be anonymous.

Either way, my message in the Scribl pane was an attempt to commence the debate on your Alphasmart comments, which you have now done. If I was unfair in any way, I apologise unreservedly.

Andrew, it was I who left the message in the Scribl pane, to counter a perception that moderated comments were not making it to the blog post. I apologise unreservedly if that is not the case.

However, I did immediately post notice of my actions to the Alphasmart list thread, which has my username and a Flickr email address. I was in no way trying to be anonymous about it, and I hope you can clearly see that.

I am pleased that you have now been able to post the comments and have engaged in debate about what you said.
